Let’s face it, it happens to the best of us. There are days when you simply can’t function normally and the funniest thing is that, most often, you can’t even come up with the reason for that down and out feeling. Feeling blue once in a while is perfectly normal; it is a part of living. Life is all about that strange yo-yo phenomenon which is so perplexing and confusing. Up one moment and down the other. The mood swings, the depressive moments, its all part of the game. Cheer up! There are ways and means to beat that feeling of gloom and doom. For me, these work -
Tap it up – How about dancing away your blues? Ever tried it out? Well, just do it. Dancing is supposed to be a fantastic exercise that will loosen those feel-good hormones and get your juices revved up and about. Fast paced music can be mind blowing enough to take the depressive feeling away. If you don’t want to dance, how about singing or playing some instrument?
Flower power – Bring those crystal vases out. Flowers are good. They can bring back the sunshine, literally, into your life. Can there be a more effective element than some sunflowers to bring sunshine back into your life. They combine the healing effects of both colour therapy and aromatherapy and who can remain gloomy after the double dose of cheer?
Colour code – colour therapy is very effective. You could wear the colours or use them around you in the interiors of your house or just place some interesting objects in the recommended colours. Colour therapy advocates the use of red colour, which is the colour of energy, vitality and power. It will help get rid of depression while green, the colour of harmony and balance is good for tired nerves and helps elevate mood. It will balance the emotions and bring about a feeling of calmness. You could also try out blue, which is the colour of truth, serenity and harmony. Blue is good for cooling, calming, and soothing the mind.
There is also lavender, the colour of equilibrium which helps with spiritual healing and can be used as a tranquilliser to aid sleep. Amazing power, that!
Clutter clean- up- Carrying emotional garbage is like carrying an unmanageable load of rubbish on the head. You don’t want to carry extra baggage that will damage your psyche and make you feel blue throughout your life. Emotional clutter can be even more damaging, so find out ways to correct those mistakes. Do anything if you can correct them and if that is not possible, forgive yourself and toss it out of your life.
Take a break- Maybe you just have been working too hard or maybe you are stuck in a routine that is boring and monotonous. Not happy situation, that! A break gives a person the much-needed breather and brings on a fresh outlook towards the problems. Take a stock of the situation. If you feel that the present job is frustrating, it is time to look for another one.
Fun n frolic – How long since you did something outrageous? If you have been leading a staid life, which is boring and dull, the dark moods will definitely cloud your life. Experiment with outlandish ideas and learn to laugh at yourself. It has been found that children laugh approximately 400 times a day but adults laugh only about 20 times a day. What stops you from doing the same?
Positive power- Let’s face it, there is a whole lot of power in positive thinking. If you think that good things are just around the corner, you will feel brighter and more cheerful. Probably, you will also find good things around the corner. When you leave the house each morning, just say to yourself a couple of times and with conviction –“ I’m going to have a great day and nothing can stop me from doing so”. It is amazing what can happen.
Thank God - Express your gratitude to the almighty for all that he has given you, and he has given a lot to us, it is just that we are greedy and keep asking for more. Write down half a dozen things every day that you are grateful for, right from the perfectly functioning limbs to the loving family, the flowers, the birds and the beautiful nature. This cannot fail to cheer you up.
Friend support. Take a day out with your girl-friends from school or early days. Spending time with friends who know you in and out will help you be yourself. You will come away feeling younger, more positive and more excited by life than you were before you met up. Invite them over to share a bite and catch up on each other’s lives. It is the best rejuvenator.
Kid stuff -Spend time with children. Children have an incredible capacity for spreading cheer and joy. No one can remain unaffected in their joyous company. They could teach you a thing or two about the joy of living.
Become a student. Take music lessons, learn to make your own dresses or do your decorating. Catch up with the latest in computers or simply start painting. Maybe for your own eyes, if you are not confident, in the beginning. Visualize the end product of your efforts and imagine the changes it could bring in your life. Follow it through the end. An added bonus will be the increased self-esteem you bring for yourself.
Seek solutions- A nagging problem can be the most depressing factor one can face. It could be a frustrating job, a bad relationship, or some health problem. Get cracking and find solutions to the problems, no matter how minor or major. Try to talk over your problems with a friend, or if that is impossible do a search in any of the search engines by typing the related terms and find out a support group.
Reward yourself. If there is a job that you hate to do, household accounts, home repairs etc. don’t keep putting it off so that it is constantly nagging at you. Just get it done. Then reward yourself with whatever you love, a sexy new outfit, a bunch of flowers, two bars of chocolate or an evening at your favourite restaurant. It will boost your energies and take the load off your mind.
Life is all about living with joy and enjoyment. Each moment is a special one because the present moment will never return in your life. So make the best of it and stop feeling dejected just because something went wrong somewhere. Remember, nothing is more important than your happiness. Here’s to a sunny life!
